New Look for Downtown Denison

7-1-06 – Denison is making plans for a main street makeover this summer. Officials are hoping to re-create and old-fashioned downtown atmosphere to help promote tourism.

Starting as soon as Wednesday, crews will install 79 new, old-fashioned street lights from the 100 to 600 blocks of Main Street. New trash cans and benches will also be placed in the downtown area.

The city’s “Main Street” office applied for a state grant five years ago and received $300,000 through Tex-Dot’s Transportation Enhancement Act. Officials hope the aesthetic changes will promote tourism and bring new business to town.

The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the Fall Festival in October.
