7-1-06 - KENNEDY SPACE CENTER (AP) - The first space shuttle launch in almost a year will have to wait another day. NASA has called off today's attempt to put Discovery into space because of thunderstorm clouds near Kennedy Space Center.
Liftoff is rescheduled for 3:26 p-m Eastern time tomorrow.
Storm clouds moved in and out of the launch zone throughout the morning and early afternoon. As the countdown held at the nine-minute mark, it became clear the weather would not cooperate.
As shuttle commander Steven Lindsey put it, "It wasn't our time today."
The seven astronauts aboard then began the process of backing out of their launch procedures.
They could face a similar situation tomorrow. More bad weather is in the forecast for the rest of the Independence Day weekend.
