CALLISBURG, TX ― For many parents sending kids off to school on a bus is a fact of life. But some people in Callisburg say that commute is downright scary. Stephanie Brletic reports.

With several major accidents at the notoriously dangerous intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and FM 678 in Callisburg, fear of getting in an accident, injury, or worse are on the minds of drivers like Brad Strickland.

"It’s something you think about every time you pass by. You know that it could happen," Strickland, a Callisburg High School graduate, says.

Strickland says he knew the two students involved in last April’s accident when the small car they were driving was hit by a tractor trailer.

Callisburg ISD superintendent Charles Holloway agrees the intersection needs to be safer. District studies show because of transportation to and from campuses, students cross FM 678 in some form or fashion 455,000 times in 180 days.

"You know it's of great concern to us, and to witness one fatality here myself, and you know several other close calls, it's just something we need to get done," Holloway says.

Holloway met with TX-DOT traffic engineers Thursday, who observed the intersection to determine if there is a way to improve safety.

Holloway wants to see an overpass built and says TX-DOT is doing the best they can. But finding funding is the name of the game, and right now the $7.5 million project isn't scheduled until 2020.

"TX-DOT officials are doing a special grant applications and things like that, and there's one pot of money that there's for extreme situations and that's kind of what we think this is," Holloway says.

We talked to TX-DOT officials who told us the intersection may be busy enough to install traffic signals, but everything depends on the results of the data collected.
