BONHAM, Tex. ― Even though gas prices are dropping, most of us are still looking for ways to save cash. One business owner in Bonham found a way to do so by making his new store completely energy independent. Stephanie Brletic joins us in the studio with details.

Farmers are known for using tractors to cultivate their crops, but now the owner of Tractor City in Bonham is getting attention for using those crops to cultivate his business.

Tractor City has been open for a little more than a week, but owner David Cardile says it's already gaining worldwide attention.

"This is a great accomplishment for Fannin County. I mean, this is the first all-green tractor facility in the world," Cardile says.

The all-green facility is made of 100% recycled steel, the carpets are made from crushed glass, held together by glue made from peaches, the cement is made of fly-ash, even the insulation is made from soy, watermelon and cantaloupe rinds.

The facility is powered by wind turbines, which makes paying the bills a breeze. Cardile's power bill is less than $47. He estimates that using traditional means, the bill would be at least $1,500.

Cardile says he is proud to be energy independent.

"It’s very important. I mean, you can become self sufficient, you don't have the power companies dictating to you, what you're going to pay and how you have to pay your bill and when you have to pay your bill. Now you can produce power and sell it back to them."

U.S. Congressman Ralph Hall is on the Energy Subcommittee. He stopped by Tractor City on Friday to see the facility firsthand.

Hall calls Cardile “a true conservator of energy,” and says more people need to follow in those footsteps.

"We have so much energy in the world, and we're major users of energy. We're buying 60% of it from OPEC nations that don't like us. That's a mistake." Rep. Ralph Hall, (R), 4th Congressional District, says.

Cardile tells us it's easier and less expensive to go green than people might expect and welcomes anyone to stop by his facility for tips.
