7-21-06 The Grayson County Airport will reactivate their control tower for the first time in three decades. In its heyday, this tower was the control center for military traffic flying in and out of Perrin Airfield. But 35 years after it closed, plans are underway to reopen it for a different kind of traffic.
After a trip to Austin yesterday to meet with TEX-DOT aviation officials the airport director says it's likely the tower will begin directing corporate and private flight traffic by January 2007.
With the recent economic growth in airport business, especially ITTC's plans for military aviation training, it's mostly a safety issue.
The airport director says he should know within the next month if the funding is available to redo the tower interior and to bring in new equipment. After that, they'll begin looking to hire tower operators.
Officials will need about half a million dollars in project funding. The airport director says at this time, he doesn't expect the Wright Amendment to negatively affect the airport traffic.
