New Form of Government on Wilson’s Ballot

7-23-06 – Voters in Wilson will consider a measure to change how the city government operates during Tuesday’s primary elections. Voters currently elect their city officials. Under a proposed measure, a statutory form of government would be put in place.

Under the new form, voters would elect trustees who would then appoint the mayor, police chief and other city officials. This would be a change over the current town government system operated in Wilson.

Some residents are against the proposal. Stanley Welch has printed ads in the local newspaper and posted signs. He says the proposed new form of government would take power out of voters hands.

If the proposal passes on Tuesday, voters would have to hold another election later in the year to pick trustees.

The primary elections will be held Tuesday, July 25th. Polls are open from 7am to 7pm.
