GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. ― Animals running loose are often a nuisance and sometimes dangerous. Sherwood Shores residents claim vicious dogs are attacking pets in their neighborhood. Rita Kotey has the story.

Residents say they have consistently seen at least nine dogs roaming the neighborhood, and on one occasion they've seen as many as forty-two.

They say people bring dogs that are sick or have mange and dump those dogs in their neighborhood.

Neighbors say the dogs travel in packs, and kill their own pets by tearing them apart.

They say this has been going on for the past six months, and at least five of their pets, and a cow, have been killed.

Sherwood Shores resident Carol Parnell says she is concerned for the safety of her children.

"They live right here down the street here from where I live, and they've become a vicious dog pack. They've killed everybody's dog in the neighborhood off and on several dogs around here. They’ve attacked the livestock down the street."

Parnell, along with other residents, says that they have contacted Grayson County's animal services to come and capture the dogs, but they are still waiting for that to happen.

Dear Gracie, I drove by that address this weekend and you are right.

Saturday night I saw four of them tear a raccoon apart. It needs to stop.

Are there any volunteers to take care of this problem ? Our Men folk are a bunch of cowards. If so they are at 253 Whitaker Circle. There is a blue pool in the yard. There is a white travel trailer where the man lives.

Anonymous on Nov 13, 2008 at 07:37 PM - - what are you saying? "Former Resident" is saying to find out our rights, and not to be bullied. Can you read? I have taken the advise of "Former Resident". The residents concerned about these dogs need to have a meeting (that is our right) - and figure out how to get rid of these dogs. Anonymous on Nov 13, 2008 at 07:37 PM - learn to comprehend.

If the handgun ISN'T concealed, is it legal??? Baseball bats work just as good as guns. Also, they make really great high-powered CO2 guns now. The county will eventually be sued- when the "right" person, such as a kid, gets hurt by these monsters...and the COUNTY will lose...big bucks. The county needs to grow something about ten inches below the spine-e of 'em... They're supposed to "protect" their citizens, but they aren't doing their jobs- FIRE them in the next election! Let them know you deserve better- and will GET better people who WILL do their jobs!

There are not enough CHL holders out there to deal with all the dogs running loose. Not everybody has a gun (in spite of what silly yankees think), not every one should be firing a gun and shooting dogs that are only in your own yard will not fix the problem because the losers that let these dogs run loose get new ones and let them out too. The dogs are all over neighborhoods, taxpaying citizens can't go out for a simple walk around the block without carrying big sticks or some type of chemical spray to fend of threatening dogs. I agree that shooting them would be one way to solve it, but you can't carry your gun around the neighborhood shooting dogs. What happens if someone misses and hits a kid or something?? The county needs to grow a spine and take care of this problem.

You can always put rat poison in hamburger meat and leave it on your own property. If they come onto your property to get it... well then the owner should have kept it at home.

these dogs came into cedar mills marina early holloween morning and got into the petting zoo and masacured all the animals 2 large goats 2 small goats 1 sheep 2 ducks 2 hens 2 chickens tramatized the young cow.the animal parts were everywhere.the sheriff was called they did nothing did not even come out to investigate.I bet if we showed pictures of the cedar mills masacure on the national news it would get their attention.it was sickening even to the hardened hunters that work at the marina. something has to be done the dogs get turned loose out here all the time left to starve or kill for food. these dogs just killed

Jess I agree with you. I love animals but not near as much as I love my kids. When I lived in the country I had some dog wonder up. It was drooling a lot and growling and before we could get all the kids inside it cornered my 6 year old. Every time we got close it turned away from him and growled. I had my brother in-law get his gun out of his truck and take care of the problem. Did I feel bad?? Maybe a little but it was what had to be done. There wasn't anyone else who would have taken care of the problem for me. My son was scared but not hurt. You do what you have to do take care of your kids even when it means doing something you might not want to do.

Please people on here do not listen to Former Resident, this person knows nothing, if these dogs are harming you in anyway or anywhere shoot the dog and kill them

Posted by: Former resident Location: of Texas on Nov 13, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Sherwood Shores Residents - Learn your rights. Yes it is illegal to "just" shoot a dog. BUT, is it illegal to shoot a dog who is on your property threatening you? Find out - do some research - someone knows a lawyer friend - get the facts, then act. Don't be bullied - by the dogs or the residents. My best to all of you - keep your kids & your selves safe.

I live next door to some of the ones that let their pitbull/mixed breed dogs run free. I have asked them nicely to keep them out of my yard. All I get from theses drug dealers is a cussing. I have called Grayson County Animal Control and have not got a personal appearance yet. I have had Grayson Co. Sheriffs out here to report one of theirs trying to attack me. Luckily I caught it around the throat and choked it till it was week, then threw it in their back yard to only be invited to the street to fight. I have had to run out in the street on several occations to chase these dogs off of people walking down the street. Again, reported it to Grayson Co. Sheriff and nothing was done. See the story on 6 arrested in grayson county drug bust and you can see some of the ones that cause this problem.

BRING IT BEFORE THE COMMISINERS COURT

Posted by: Lisa Location: Oklahoma on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Keeping in mind what Ralph said - can someone offer up a backhoe to dig a large enough hole with to dispose of the carcasses? Children should be safe. If the county does nothing - they have made a choice to not act. That seems enough to me to have a large law suit if someone is hurt.

Personally, I have no problem with someone shooting a vicious dog(s). Keep in mind however, even if one does have the right to protect their life and property, that particular right would not be so protective if the bullet that passes through (or misses) the trespasser, hits one of your neighbors, a passerby, or damages someone else's property. So if you decide to shoot the offender(s), consider all the angles, and be prepared for all the possible consequences.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Bad Dog, why bother with teh commissioner, get your gun and start shooting, so I can't type!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 03:12 PM
LMAO@Commissioner coming to Sherwood Shores. Yeah that'll happen.

Posted by: Frank Location: Grayson on Nov 12, 2008 at 02:29 PM
People can't walk their dogs in Sherwood Shores because of pit bulls loose. The dogs have killed other pets, tame rabbits, attacked one elderly man, nothing was done, but let me tell you if one comes on my property it will leave in a sack! I don't care who they belong to, there is still a leash law here.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Bad Dog, why bother with the commissioner, get your get at start shooting!!!

Posted by: Jess on Nov 12, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Whenever a dog attacks viciously in packs they should no longer be considered dogs, they should be considered weapons. Very dangerous weapons at that since there's more than one. If you cared SO MUCH about your dogs, then you shouldn't let out to roam free and terrorize the neighborhoods. If another dog comes onto my property and attacks me, my animals, etc....you best believe that dog would be dead. I'm not for animal cruelty, but a vicious dog is too dangerous to leave alone so it can hurt others. Like clint said: any damage they do will cost you money and it's not worth the consequences. I love animals but they are not of the same value as people.

Try bugging your county Precinct Commissioner to address the "Bad Dog" problem in your area. They have the ability to persuade the "Dog Catcher" to sic'em!!!!

Posted by: Me Location: Here on Nov 12, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Hey Kingston Taxpayer. Your first mistake was listening to anyone telling you it against county law was it one of the wonderful county mounties over there? I'm not sure exactly how the law reads but I'm sure if you can kill a person that is on your property threatening you then you can kill a dog on your property threatening you. But obviously you have to prove you were being threatened. That is if someone even cares. But being an animal lover I think someone should step up and take these dogs in. Doesn't grayson county have a humane society or division of the ASPCA? I'm sure there is a shelter. Do some research people there are people that will take these dogs in if they are able to be socialized if not then they will be humainly euthenized.

I live close to Sherwood Shores an about 2 weeks ago 2 dogs attacked my Lab in my yard . Which cost me 280.00 bucks ! But its safe to say those dogs wont hurt my children or dog again ! There buried in my pasture an thats where they belong I love animals but cant take the risk of them hurting my kids !!!!

Posted by: here Location: still on Nov 11, 2008 at 09:54 PM
The county will take no responsibility because they don't want to be sued. Don't expect any form of government to protect you or your children. YOU have to do it. I have absolutely NO qualms about shooting (or otherwise killing) any dogs on my property that I perceive to be dangerous to me or my family. I really feel sorry for those of you who won't take care of the problem when it is on YOUR property! You don't have to ASK for permission- YOU own YOUR property! It may not be a child that the dogs gang up on- it may be an elderly person- your neighbor or your friend. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES AND YOUR NEIGHBORS!! Help is NOT coming to help you! Take care of it yourself and be done with it.

Posted by: Ralph Location: Denison on Nov 11, 2008 at 07:28 PM
I am SO surprised. Since most of you folks having this dog problem are probably Republicans, contact the County Judge or one of the Commissioners. They are all Republicans. Let's see if they can do something besides get elected.

Posted by: mamma Location: fannin on Nov 11, 2008 at 05:51 PM
It is not against the law to kill theses dogsif they come on your property I know we have took care of several pittbulls that came on our property the county is the one that said to do it if you live in the city limits then the animal control better get their butts out there and take care of it

Dear Marv, Please feel free to come to Sherwood shores and adopt as many as you like.

I have called KXII to do a story just like this one with no results.Dogs are a problem just across the lake from Sherwood Shores.I would have already taken care of my problem but have been advised by the county law that it is a felony to kill them and I would go to jail.I can trap them and take them to Ardmore pound for 25 dollars apiece.I have had all of my chickens killed and been threated by these dogs.I have told them that these dogs will get some kid on a fourwheeler or golf cart and all the county would say is it is illegal to ride a four wheeler on county roads. These are not county roads or they would do the upkeep on them. Its just a matter of time until someone gets hurt.Counted 13 dogs when I left for work today!!!!!!

Posted by: USA Location: Sherman on Nov 11, 2008 at 03:00 PM
You people need to wake up on here if they came after my animals they would be dead and I would be the one to kill them, and yes I would clean the mess up too, there is no sense in this happening you would think you people are a buunch of little kids that can't do for yourself, shut them and get rid of them!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 11, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Maybe if some pot was planted on the dogs then the sheriffs dept. might make an appearance.

Posted by: dookey on Nov 11, 2008 at 12:20 PM
All you Men there in Sherwood Shores get a gun an take care of this! Before a child is killed ... Come on people wake up !!!

Posted by: Ben on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I don't agree with shooting dogs just because they are loose but something needs to be done. I have to walk through neighborhoods as part of my job and I've called animal control several times about vicious dogs that have tried to attack me. Nothing has been done to the owners or the dogs. Maybe it will take a mauling to get a better response.

Posted by: Wondering Location: Texas on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:36 AM
Hey Marv, are YOU going to take care of the problem? In case you missed it, Garyson County will not do anything, the dog owners DO NOT CARE enough about the dogs or the neighbors to keep their dogs at home and people are TIRED of not being able to walk around the block. Let me guess... you must be one of the people letting your dog run loose?? What do you propose people do??? I see a lot of finger pointing and accusations of people being MEAN for shooting the loose dogs, but no alternative solutions offered up. To all of the dog lovers, let's hear some solutions -since we know we cannot count on the joke called animal control! I am certainly open to suggestions! I have no desire to shoot a dog, but I am real tired of not being able to take my daughter out for a walk!

Posted by: Karen Location: Oklahoma on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:16 AM
The same news broadcast said gun sales are on the rise in Texoma. *Hint-Hint* I do not like the idea of shooting animals, but, when they are diseased, mean, and most of all a threat to children - it is time for them to go.

Posted by: marv Location: sherman on Nov 11, 2008 at 09:42 AM
You are all a bunch of idiots answer to everthing is to shoot them how do you know which dogs are doing it and you are just as mean as the dogs they just need to eat and be cared for

Shoot'Em!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on Nov 11, 2008 at 01:42 AM
Actually. USA makes a good point. You do have a legal right to protect your property and your household if threatened. If the dog catcher won't come then deal with it yourself.

Posted by: Hunter Location: Oklahoma on Nov 11, 2008 at 01:10 AM
Start shooting a few of them and animal services might come out and start doing their job. Seems to me that if they were concerned that much about their and their pets safety that would already be happening.

Posted by: USSA Location: Sherman on Nov 11, 2008 at 12:28 AM
To USA: Will you come clean up the mess when all the dogs are shot?

Posted by: George C. Hansard Location: Rocky Point on Nov 10, 2008 at 09:02 PM
Where have you all been? This is nothing new! The Grayson Co dog catcher not catching dogs?? DUH! never has!! His salary is the biggest waste of taxpayer money in this county! My wife and neighbors begged the dog catcher to pick up dogs for years out by Grandpappy and he never did. The dog owners would watch him drive around the 'hood and let the dogs out the second as he was gone! When my wife threatened to shoot one that chased her our own yard, the so-called dog catcher said he would prosecute HER! Dude never caught a dog that didn't jump into his truck with his tail wagging! I'll even post my real name -Taxpayer and Voter Geo. C. Hansard! Ask anybody out here, they'll tell you its true! People can't even go for a walk w/o being harrassed by loose dogs and children can't ride bikes w/o being afraid! Its shameful!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 10, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Don't kill the innocent pets.

Posted by: Me Location: Sherman on Nov 10, 2008 at 07:29 PM
That's not the only place with a stray dog problem. The animal control here is a joke!

Posted by: grayson resident on Nov 10, 2008 at 06:55 PM
Well, Usa Location, the people that live there pay Grayson county taxes and should expect to have Grayson county respond to this problem. If they go out there and start shooting, they run the risk of going to jail, or hurting an innocent person. What do you think their tax money should go for?. Maybe a court appointed attorney after being arrested? You should wake up and realize that not everyone has the heart to go out and start shooting something.

Posted by: J Location: Whitesboro on Nov 10, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Grayson County is not going to do anything about it.

Posted by: USA Location: Sherman on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:56 PM
You people that live there need to wake up get your shot gun and start shooting these dogs how hard it that to do?
