Free Pre-K for Military Families

7-31-06 – In Texas pre-kindergarten enrollment will be available children of members of the military.

Previously free public school pre-k programs were only available to non-English speaking students and families that could prove an economic disadvantage.

Early this month, Governor Rick Perry signed a bill into law, allowing children of all active members of the armed forces, past and present, a free pre-kindergarten education beginning this school year.

Sherman ISD has yet to enroll any military children in their program, but they will be ready if any sign up before the start of school in two weeks.

The new legislation does not apply to children in Oklahoma.

Eligible families in Texas must present school districts with a Department of Defense ID card.

Starting August 1st, children of military families can receive a free video that explains war and deployment. The video features a “Sesame Street” theme. It is available in English or in Spanish. For a free copy, call Military One Source at 1-800-342-9647 after August 1st.
