ARDMORE, Okla. ― We have seen gas prices dropping at the pumps, but is that drop in price is also going to be seen on gas and electric bills? We went to OG&E, the largest gas and electric provider in Oklahoma, for answers.

OG&E added a fuel adjustment charge on its bills this summer.

The company says they were forced to pass the dramatic jump in natural gas prices along to their customers.

They say the average customer using 1,500 kilowatts saw an add-on of about $15 on each month’s bill.

But now that gas prices are down, the company says they cannot drop the additional charge just yet because they have not recouped all their cost for the spike in fuel prices this summer.

"We didn't charge the full amount of the fuel adjustment rider to the customer because of the higher food prices, the higher gasoline prices and all that we were paying back in the summer months. We choose to spread that out to make it a little easier on our customers to absorb that and make those payments." OG&E manager Gene Frayar says.

OG&E did say you should see that add-on fuel surcharge drop this winter because it is based on your consumption. So as you use less power, that fuel adjustment charge should be less as well.

But wait! There's more! I just looked outside and it isn't snowing. But on the inside we have just been given a "snow job" by the gas utility companies. As I recall, most electricity in this part of the country is generated by using natural gas to fire the steam boilers. The rates charged to consumers were all ratcheted up just after hurricane Katrina blew through three years ago. At that time natural gas peaked out in price at just over $15.00 per million cubic feet (mcf). Yesterday natural gas was selling at $6.02 mcf. That is less than half of what nat gas was selling for when the rates were all ratcheted up. Funny how it can go up in a heart beat but somehow it takes three years or more to come down. Consumers are getting the pickle on this one. Utilities are entitled to make a reasonable profit, but this borders on price gouging. Sadly, our elected officials couldn't see a snow storm coming if it was in their living room.
