GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. ― Grayson County has been officially declared a disaster area by the Governor’s Office one week after tornadoes ripped through the county.
Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a proclamation late Sunday stating the severe storms and tornadoes that occurred December 8th have caused a disaster in the county.
The National Weather Service confirmed the twisters touched down in Southmayd, Collinsville, and parts of Denison. Over 150 homes were damaged, thirteen of which were considered a complete loss.
"It means that there are impacts and loss of property. Too much for our local resources to handle. That we are requesting assistance from the state," explains Sarah Somers of Grayson County Emergency Management.
"It's part of a week-long effort, and before any assistance can come through us, we had to go through extensive damage assessment process, and we are very pleased with the timetable we are working with now," Somers said.
According to emergency management, only two families were reported to need aid from the Red Cross.
"It's just been a warm time to see how our Grayson County residents have been working together," Somers said.
Now storm victims could be getting more help.
"Government declaring disaster opens up several things already built up in the law and one of those will be some possible tax relief through the local tax appraiser’s office and the tax accessor," Somers says.
County Officals say they will be talking about tax relief possibilities in the next few days. The state is expected to come to a decision soon.
