As a southern Oklahoma community mourns the loss of a longtime coach and educator, we look at the dangers of railroad crossings in this Safe Family report.

While some railroad crossings do have gates, many do not. That’s why it is very important you look at your surroundings if you know you are within a mile of a railroad crossing.

Also, watch out for a second train. Just because one train goes by does not mean another isn't following behind

"The thing is don't get complacent and look and observe what’s going on, especially if it's at night or early in the morning," says Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department.

The main thing to remember is that if the gates are lowered, stop your vehicle. Driving around them is illegal and could have a deadly outcome.
