MURRAY CO., Okla -- Another area man says it was only a few months ago when he was hit by a train on the same railroad tracks that Coach Jeff Nye was crossing when he was killed. He says something should be done about these dangerous crossings.
Kevin Stover says he is lucky to be alive.
"By the time I seen the train it was ... you know... right there on me."
Stover was travelling across the same railroad tracks at a crossing not far from where Sulphur Football Coach Jeff Nye was killed.
"When I seen it, I just gunned my truck and tried to get off the tracks, cause I knew I couldn't back up and get back off of them, cause whenIi seen it the cab of the truck was on his track. There was two tracks there, and when I seen the train, the cab of my truck was on his track," Stover said.
His wife remembers the moment she got the call.
"it's scariest thing you'll ever hear because she was two weeks old, and I didn't know how to explain it to her, you know, why her dad's not here anymore and explain to my other daughter why her stepdad isn't here anymore and it's, it's the most terrified feeling in the world," said Stover's wife Beth.
Stover, who was driving a truck laying asphalt, received several cuts to his face, bruised his ribs, and his teeth cut through his lips when his truck was hit by the train.
"Even if they just put a light up, you know, to show, hey there's something on the track, you know or, or just anything besides a sign, because it's dark and they get out there and they mess up the signs, you know or they're faded or something, you're not gonna see that especially at night," said Stover.
Both he and his wife believe a better warning system is needed to prevent future tragedies along these tracks.
"When I heard the horn, you know, the train was probably 200 feet from me, 100 feet, it was so close I couldn't get out the way."
According to OHP, Burlington-Northern Santa Fe drivers are required to blow their horns a quarter of a mile before each crossing, and continuously through the entire crossing. Stover says the train that hit him was traveling 49 miles per hour, which might seem slow, but did not give him enough time to get across.
"I think a lot of times people don't take into account that, that's the only warning signal there is at some of those intersections is just the sign and so it's up to the drivers to stop like another vehicle can, and there extremely heavy and they just will not stop for traffic in the roadway," Stover said.
Officials say when approaching a railroad track, make sure you stop and look both ways, especially when there are not warning lights or crossing guards. Stover says he always looks both ways, but will be extra cautious following this recent tragedy.
