ARDMORE, Okla. -- The State of Oklahoma describes their current unemployment situation as “overwhelming,” but the state says help is on the way, and they are doing their best to decrease people's wait time and speed up the process.

At the Workforce Oklahoma office in Ardmore, we talked to people Wednesday who are satisfied with the system and others who complained of extraordinary wait times trying to get enrolled into the system.

“It is very difficult being unemployed. Jobs are very hard to come by,” says Michael Friesen.

But Friesen is a success story though. He is now gainfully employed, but he says that wouldn't have been possible without Workforce Oklahoma.

“Without the help of people down here, I couldn't have made it. I had no money for over a month and a half.”

Micheal is not alone. We spoke to the Jon Brock, the executive director of the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, who says unemployment numbers have really shot up over the past couple months.

“We’re just seeing an overwhelming increase in business. It's literally beyond our capacity to keep up,” Brock says.

Friesen says fortunately he didn't face the long wait time that many people have complained about.

“You can file online or over the phone and then check it up online. It was pretty easy.”

But for those who have had trouble filing for unemployment, help is on the way.

“We’ve added about 13 agents to our call center. We've added our mainframe capacity where we can actually physically handle more call as well as being able to increase our internet capacity.”

Brock says the staggering statistics are more of an obstacle for other job hunters.

“It’s been tough going. There’s a lot of stress on our people, as well as the people we're serving.”

Friesen says he appreciates all the efforts by Workforce Oklahoma.

“I just wanted to tell the people down here in the Ardmore office ‘thank you.’”

More changes are on the way to the Workforce Oklahoma office in Ardmore. The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission tells us the office will also be taking claims in person.
