Football Players' Suspension Upheld

8-30-06 - Just days before football season begins for local high schools, two players are at the center of a controversy over eligibility and school transfers.

Superintendents from schools within the 11-A football district met in Lindsay on Wednesday. The district is made up of school districts in Sollinsville, Saint Jo, Muenster, Era, Valley View, and Lindsay.

School administrators, parents and lawyers are facing off over whether two former Pilot Point students can play football in Collinsville. Pilot Point assistant superintendent Dan Gist says he’s convinced the two former students transferred last October solely for athletic purposes.

Freshmen at the time, the two students sat out last season - hoping to gain eligibility this year. But nearly two weeks ago, the Executive Football Committee ruled the students transferred for athletic purposes, and couldn't play.

Today the students and their parents appealed the decision, but were denied. The case isn't over though. The football district says they'll look into whether more students are involved, and if any recruiting took place.

The state may have the final say. The two students have the right to appeal the local decision in Austin with the executive committee for the UIL.
