9-19-06 - Wilson city officials asked the Carter County District Attorney to investigate the small town's police department. The move came late last week when the mayor realized money from a reserve officer account was missing.
That account comes from public donations, and is meant to provide volunteer officers with items like t-shirts, caps and badges. But Mayor Bill Miller says city officials discovered money was missing from the account a few weeks ago.
DA Craig Ladd agreed to investigate this week.
Chief of police Larry Stearns resigned for health problems on the same day city officials made the request to the DA. The mayor says his resignation is not related though.
Officials say the investigation will wrap up in two to three weeks.
