4-H dog show benefits Johnston County veterans

TISHOMINGO, OK - At the Johnston county fair ground big dogs, little dogs, hairy dogs and even ballerina dogs were in attendance.

Tishomingo's sixth grade 4-H put on a dog show to raise money for the Johnston County Veteran'S Center.

"Oh they're excited," said Jule Carroll, sixth grade 4-H leader about the kids in the club.

Carroll says the club started planning the event two months ago. It all began when one member wanted to start dog training for 4-H, leading to the next act: a dog show. And that led to supporting veterans, a cause close to Carroll's heart.

"My brother's serving, he's overseas right now and I'm kinda doing it in his honor," Carroll said.

To fetch their goal of $2,500, the club charged for the dog show registration fee, concessions, and other activities, like charging to walk dogs.

The proceeds are going toward a new veterans center. Johnston County Veterans President Stan Sewell said one building is old, and the other is gone.

"The old VFW burnt down, and the American legion hall is outdated and small," Sewell said.

The town will also use this combined building for scout meetings, weddings and gatherings.

Sewell said he's grateful dog-lovers are loyal to their communities.

"This is one of the most giving communities, and I'm proud to live here," he said. "Very proud to live here."

That must mean 4-H is barking up the right tree.
