ARDMORE, OK ― A Carter County family says a tattoo meant to be a tribute to their son is instead a daily reminder of a tattoo artist’s typo― and nothing is being done about it. Shelby Levins has the story.

The family says they wanted a tattoo of their son’s name, but once the ink dried, and it was too late, they realized their little boy’s name was misspelled. Now the question is who is to blame?

“It bothers me everyday. I have a couple I should get taken off as well. I’m tired of looking at it like that too,” Mike Burmeister says.

The tattoo Mike Burmeister is talking about has his son’s name, Maddox, misspelled. He says his sons name is misspelled on his wife’s arm. It should read "Maddox" but the tattoo is spelled "Mad Ox."

Burmeister says the mistake has been difficult on him and his wife.

“She broke down and cried over the whole thing. I was pretty perturbed. I even shed a tear over the whole thing.”

Now Burmeister says he just wants the tattoo fixed, and his little son’s names spelled right.

“I’m not trying to be some jerk trying to destroy someone’s dream of having a tattoo shop. I just want him to put himself in my shoes. If I tattooed his wife’s arm and I misspelled his son’s name, would he not expect me to do the same thing?” Burmeister says.

We went to talk to Robert Ortiz, the owner of Ink Spot Tattoos and the artist who tattooed Burmeister’s wife. Ortiz says he did nothing wrong, and that burmeister’s wife walked out of his shop completely satisfied.

“I asked her, “Everything fine? Everything look exactly how you want?” She says, “This is exactly what I want, I’m very happy with it,” Ortiz says.

“She gave me a tip and left.

Ortiz says he has been running the Lone Grove tattoo shop for almost 4 years, and he has been a tattoo artist for 22 years. He says Burmeister’s wife signed the release form that everyone signs before he will do any work.

“At the bottom of this release form – number 9 – it says I agree to release forever …of any claims damages and legal action.”

Burmeister says he does not want to take any legal action. He just wants his son’s name spelled right and his wife to be happy.

“It’s just time for her to go to work and show off her new tattoo the way it should have been showed off in the very first place – proud and happy.”
