Heartland Flyer Gets Back on Track

The following is a news release from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation:

The temporary delayed departure schedule for the Heartland Flyer between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth will be returned to the normal departure schedule Saturday, October 14th. Travelers using the popular rail service can again use the existing arrival and departure schedule that appears in Amtrak’s Spring-Fall 2006 System Timetable.

The trains were switched to a temporary schedule due to BNSF's annual, routine track maintenance project. With the BNSF's investment in this project, passengers will enjoy a safer, more comfortable ride with less delay.

Due to the lack of federal funding beyond this year, the Oklahoma Legislature, through HB 1078, authorized $2 million annually for the train leaving the requirement that the remaining $2 million be secured from other sources. Following meetings between Oklahoma and Texas transportation officials this summer, Secretary of Transportation Phil Tomlinson was advised that the Texas Transportation Commission approved a $2 million funding committment for the Heartland Flyer.

The Heartland Flyer made its first trip from Oklahoma City to Ft. Worth on June 14, 1999 as a federally funded joint venture between Amtrak and ODOT, ending a 20-year absence of passenger rail service in Oklahoma. More than 420,000 people have ridden the train, since it began operations in 1999, and rider-ship continues to increase.

The re-instated schedule for each of the trains is listed below for the convenience of travelers on the Heartland Flyer.
