SOUTHMAYD, TX -- Twenty-nine Yorkshire terrier show dogs were killed in a fire Wednesday afternoon at a kennel in Southmayd.

Colleen Woods, the owner of Crosswind Kennels, says 29 Yorkshire terriers died in the fire, and 19 others lived.

The fire sparked just after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Crosswind Kennels in downtown Southmayd on State Highway 56.

Nineteen of the dogs did make it out alive. Those dogs are all valued from $650-$3,500.

Woods, who was not home when the fire broke out, says she's been in business for 30 years, selling dogs all over the world.

Five fire departments responded, and officials say the most likely cause was a lightning strike.

The building itself was destroyed. Woods tells us the kennel building was not insured.
