10-14-06 Homecoming weekend was a big one at SOSU as the university unveiled their new student union building. The $14.5 million building stretches 60,000 square feet and is home to a cafeteria, auditorium, and gymnasium.
The university hopes the building will give students a place to gather and socialize while also being a center of activity for the college.
The building is not fully completed, but is now open to the general public. About 300 people were on campus for the building's opening ceremonies Saturday morning.
University officials have been pushing for a student union building since 1989 and think "The U" building will unify the campus.
