10-24-06 - A woman has been arrested in Durant after her car hit a child who was using a crosswalk in front of the Durant Intermediate School on Tuesday.
The fourth grade boy was taken by ambulance to the Southeastern Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police say 23-year-old Norma Martinez was traveling 20 miles above the posted speed limit for the school zone. She traveled about 100 feet before stopping after the accident. While police were investigating the crash, Martinez attempted to get back into her car and was arrested for reckless driving and failure to comply with an officer.
Police do not believe Martinez saw the boy crossing the street. The accident happened shortly after school let out and the crossing guard had not yet arrived at the crosswalk.
