450 American Legion Riders roll through Texoma for Legacy Run

POTTSBORO, TX-A band of over 400 motorcyclists braved the Texas heat as they revved through Texoma Tuesday for the American Legion's Legacy Run. It's an effort to raise millions of dollars for children of fallen soldiers.

Pottsboro's American Legion Post 231 welcomed 450 riders Tuesday afternoon.

"It's a great honor. When they called and asked us if we could do it, this is the first time anything like this has happened to a post here in Texas. We are really honored to have them here," said Gary Winters, Post 231 Commander.

National Commander, James Koutz said they've travelled more than 800 miles starting in Indiana on their way to the National Convention in Houston. But that's not the only reason why they're making the trip.

"We're halfway through this. I think we got three more stops and it's been a great ride so far. Everything's been great, we've collected a little over $200,000 in donations already for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund," he said.

Koutz said the scholarship fund will benefit children of fallen soldiers who served after the 9/11 attacks and they're trying to raise $20-million.

"It helps all the families of our fallen comrades. That's something that we gotta support because they sacrificed so much for us," he said.

Koutz said they've received a lot of support during the ride, some even flew in from overseas just to take part.

If you put all the bikes in one straight line, it will be two miles long from end to end. And Koutz said veterans and riders from all over the country--and some from the UK--took part in the Legacy ride.

Winters said they're glad to be part of the effort.

"American Legion really supports their community, their local communities and helps out any way we can. Raising money for these kids who don't have parents anymore, that's real important to them and their families," he said.

The riders will arrive in Houston by Thursday morning. The convention starts Friday.
