Rare Dairy Auctioned in Marshall County

The last grade "A" dairy in Marshall County went on the auction block Thursday. For 30 years, Gary and Bettie Johnson have been in the dairy business. But this year, the drought got the best of them and they were forced to fold.

Since 1976, Gary Johnson has risen before the sun to milk his 150 head of cattle. But today, his prize-winning Holsteins went to the highest bidder along with his dairy barn and milking equipment.

Gary says the lack of rain forced feed prices to go up and milk prices to plummet, putting him out of business. While he's giving up his livelihood, he also has plans to vacation for the first time in 30 years.

The Johnson’s raised their seven children on the dairy. They say it helped them instill in their children values like discipline and hard work.
