Jail Admin Quits in Bryan County

11-12-06 - The administrator of the Bryan County Jail abruptly quit on Sunday afternoon. Huck Nelson accepted the job in September, but county leaders say stress and the lack of time with his family led to his resignation.

Members of the Bryan County Jail Trust Authority told First News on Sunday night that Nelson’s departure did not trigger any disruption of operations at the jail. They say assistant jail administrator Donna Hutchinson was called in, along with other previous jailers, to keep things in working order.

Hutchison has already given her 2-weeks notice though, but she rescinded it upon Nelson's resignation. She also re-hired three former jailers on Sunday to deal with the loss of manpower. A member of the JTA says up to 5 jail employees had quit in the last 7 days.

The Bryan County Jail has seen an inordinate amount of turnover at the jail administrator position in the past two years. During that time, the jail has seen numerous escapes and is also facing heavy fines from the state.
