The following is a news release from the Durant PD:
On October 18, 2006, the Durant Police Department was awarded the International Association of Chiefs of Police Civil Rights Award at the annual convention held at the Boston Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The Durant Police Department received recognition for its continued outreach program to the Hispanic citizens of our community.
Durant was one of four (4) police departments from across the world selected for the honor, the others being Edmonton Police in Ontario, Canada, Calgary Police in Alberta, Canada, and the Nalgonda Police District in Andahara, India.
According to the IACP, the Civil Rights committee received an unprecedented number of submissions from all across the globe. The prestigious award is given to law enforcement organizations that demonstrate exemplary performance in the investigation or prevention of civil rights violations, education efforts on civil rights issues and actions or interventions to protect civil and human rights.
“This award would not have been possible had it not been for the efforts of several individual police employees and the tremendous contributions of Pastor Alejo Benito and the congregation from the Iglesias Baptist Church at 1104 W. Alabama,” said Chief Gary Rudick.
“We were very honored to have been selected for our efforts to reach out to the Hispanic Community and to come to a better understanding on both sides of our mutual responsibilities to make Durant a better and safer place to live,” said Rudick. “I was very proud of our police department and our community for being recognized for the steps we’ve taken in improving the quality of life of all our citizens.”
The people responsible for the success of this program will be honored at the Public Hearing session of the City Council Meeting on November 14th, at 6 p.m. The honorees include Capt. Duward Cook, Lt. David Houser, Lt. Johnny Rutherford and DuWayne Wingfield from the Durant Police Department, Ms. Dawn Bonham of the Bryan County Crisis Center and Pastor Benito and his wife Heather from the Iglesias Baptist Church.
