Vietnam Vets Make Plans for Southern OK

11-13-06 - A group of Vietnam War veterans is hoping to join forces in southern Oklahoma.

There are nine Vietnam Veterans of America chapters at work in Oklahoma, but the nearest chapter is actually in Sherman.

Local veterans can't afford to drive that far to enjoy the benefits so folks in seven counties are teaming up to change that by forming the southern Oklahoma chapter of the VVA. They must convince 25 area men and women who served on active duty in the military between February 1961 and May 1975 to sign up.

Organizers say the benefits are endless. The VVA works to advocate issues important to veterans, and each month a government representative will meet with members to answer questions concerning disability benefits and health care.

The first meeting is tomorrow night at seven o'clock at the Madill Masonic Lodge. Vietnam vets from Carter, Love, Marshall, Bryan, Choctaw, Johnson and Atoka counties are encouraged to attend. You must bring your DD-214 to prove you're a veteran and membership dues are 20 dollars.
