11-15-06 - Dickson High School has been nominated for a prestigious national award. Dickson is one of six in the state nominated to receive the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School award.
Five years ago, Dickson High School ranked last in the state on the academic performance index. Now, they're second in our area behind Plainview and their hard work is catching the eye of state officials.
In order to do that, 40 percent of their students must be from disadvantaged backgrounds and show improvement in reading and math. They must also score in the top 10 percent in those subjects on achievement tests.
Dickson students have far exceeded that goal, thanks to new remedial programs, attention to academics and a lot of hard work.
The school will submit an application in February. The winners will be selected next fall. If Dickson is named a Blue Ribbon School the principal and teacher will get to fly to Washington DC and be recognized by President Bush.
