11-21-06 - Bilingual classes in the Sherman School District are serving as a model for other districts.
Washington elementary Bilingual Education Program is in its fifth year. It's grown to 165 students learning a normal curriculum, both in English and in Spanish.
The proof is evident with each student. The program begins in pre-kindergarten and goes through sixth grade. Each year, the students gradually move farther away from their native language.
With the goal being the same as other students, more and more families are starting to become aware of the success of the program. The response has been outstanding, especially from the students.
Each classroom has a specially certified teacher that is capable of teaching in this special program.
To qualify for the program, the student must show that he or she is completely fluent in a language other than English.
