11-29-06 - Matt Brown signed off the air for the final time during First News at 6 & 10pm on Wednesday night. Charlie Haldeman will assume the position of News Director and primary anchor. Brown is leaving to become Assistant News Director at Gray Television's KAKE-TV in Wichita, Kansas.
KXII-TV General Manager Rick Dean announced that Charlie Haldeman will assume the position of News Director effective December 3, 2006. Haldeman will also become the Co-anchor of First News at 6 and 10.
"Matt will be greatly missed, but I believe Charlie can carry on the tradition of excellence Matt has brought to the news division. We're sorry to see Matt leave, but we're happy he'll continue his career with Gray Television," Dean said.
Haldeman most recently served as First News A.M. Co-anchor and General Assignments Reporter for the station. He joined KXII-TV in January 2006. Prior to coming to the area, Haldeman worked for Gray Television's KBTX-TV in Bryan/College Station, Texas where he served as Anchor, Reporter, and Assignments Editor from 2001 to 2004. "I'm very excited about the opportunity to lead a top notch newsroom. The past 11 months have been a great preview of things to come for me and my family. KXII has been an amazing place to work, and becoming News Director adds another challenge. Matt's made the transition easy for me. It's an overused statement, but I really do have big shoes to fill," Haldeman said. In addition to his television career, Haldeman also spent 10 years working in radio as an on-air personality and Program Director.
Matt Brown has been KXII-TV's News Director since December 2001. Viewers in the Sherman-Denison-Ardmore area will recognize Matt as the Anchor of First News at 5, 6, and 10; a position he's held for 10 years.
Prior to leading the First News team, Matt served as Assistant News Director. He began his career with KXII-TV as a Reporter in Ardmore back in 1994. "I'm leaving with mixed feelings. I've had so many great memories being here at KXII. My new job will put me closer to family, but I will leave my KXII family behind. Although the move is bittersweet for me, I’m confident Charlie and the First News team will carry on the tradition of serving local viewers," Brown said.
During Matt's time with the station, KXII has won the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters awards for Best Small Market Newscast and Spot News Coverage as well as the Spot News Coverage award from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters.
Maureen Kane was named anchor of the 5, 6 and 10pm newscasts earlier in November. She replaces Shannon Wolfson, who accepted the position of reporter with KXAN in Austin.
