SHERMAN, TX -- Sometimes what looks good on paper doesn't always look so good in the real world.
"I found out from my stepdad a couple of months ago (we got) a letter in the mail," said Scott Webb.
He owns a home on Washington Street. His property is right next to a bridge and right in the middle of a street renovation project.
"It’s seen its better days and it's time to make improvements in that road...and the bridge on Washington Street is in poor repair and needs to be replaced," said Jeff Miller, Sherman’s director of public works.
Along with replacing the bridge, the project will also widen and straighten some of the tight curves in the road. But to do this the city needs to expand the right of way, which means cutting out a big slice of Scott Webb’s property, and more importantly to Webb, cutting down some of his trees
"Disturbing this many trees for this long...if there is a sidewalk or whatever...taking out one tree is going to affect the tree next to it," said Webb.
The improvements are needed but the process isn’t easy.
"Upgrading an existing road is a difficult process. It is challenging”, said Miller.
One of the biggest challenges the city faces is finding a way to fix a road for everybody, without taking too much away from anybody.
"It can be a little bit painful but I think everybody is going to be happy with the end product,” said Miller.
