COOKE COUNTY, TX -- One man is behind bars in Denton County, accused of leading authorities on a chase through three counties. That chase turned into a one-man standoff that ended northwest of Collinsville after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Stacy Brandon West, 34, was taken into custody and will be taken to the Denton County Jail.
A Denton County spokesperson says it all started out as a welfare check. They say West went to his 9-year-old son's mother's home, caused a disturbance, and took off with the boy going north along Highway 377.
The chase entered Grayson and Cooke Counties and ended when West pulled over along Cooke County Road 2134 near FM 3164, northwest of Collinsville.
Deputies on the scene say the child was dropped off safely at a home on Brandywine Lane before West stopped.
They were concerned because he reportedly had a gun. Police talked West into a peaceful surrender Tuesday night.
"Ultimately, he talked on the telephone to his brother, apparently, and his brother convinced him the thing to do was to surrender," said Cooke County Sheriff Mike Compton.
"The information I've received at this time is that Mr. West is being taken back to Denton County to be placed in custody there."
One deputy suffered a possible broken wrist while laying down road spikes. West reportedly swerved at the deputy, causing him to fall as he avoided being hit with the vehicle.
Deputies on the scene reported the driver throwing items out of the passenger side window.
