12-20-06 High gas prices and a less-active storm season have forced an Ardmore roofing company to temporarily layoff employees through the holidays. On December 8th Atlas Roofing officials were forced to lay off 39 manufacturing employees; that’s about half of their hourly staff. Officials say they held off as long as they could, however they just didn’t have enough business to pay the bills.
When employees are hired on, they're told the job is seasonal and temporary layoffs are a possibility. The human resources manager says they hope to hire all 39 workers back in January. Until then they are eligible to collect unemployment. In 2004 Atlas Roofing had to layoff employees in one department for about 2 months; all workers were hired back.
