12-20-06 A roofing comany has been forced to temporarily lay off some of it's employees all because of a quiet storm season and rising gas prices.
On December 8th, Atlas Roofing Company told 39 employees they would be let go during the holidays. Those employees make up about half of Atlas' hourly workforce.
Officials say they know the news comes at a bad time, but they tell all employees upon hiring them that seasonal layoffs are possible.
Company officials say they were not selling enough shingles to pay the bills.
"We actually should have had layoffs two months ago, hope business would have turned around we could hold on to employees but that didn't happen," said Rita Hoedebeck, Human Resources Manager.
The company hopes to bring back all the laid off workers in January. Until then, those workers are eligible to receive unemployment.
