POTTSBORO, TX -- Aaron Reinert and his family have been coming out to Treasure Island for a long time. The Reinerts' favorite spot, a beach on Treasure Island, is a popular place for lake-goers to come ashore and have a good time, but lots of people and lots of fun leads to lots of trash being left behind.

"Broken glass is a big concern. There are lots of children that come out and run around and cut their feet," said Reinert.

The lake manager for the Army corps of Engineers, Joe Custer, says they are aware of the problem, but there's not a lot they can do about it.

“As far as working out in the remote areas and picking up trash, we have neither the time nor the resources for that type of cleanup," said Custer.

Reinert and his family have been coming out and picking up as much of the trash as they can, but he says keeping the beach clean is a matter of personal responsibility.

"The easiest thing to do is just to bring a trash bag with you when you come out here and pick up your trash when you leave. It’s not difficult to do," said Reinert.

It is a sentiment echoed by lake manager Joe Custer.

"If you bring your pop cans, your drinks, whatever they are, when you get done, sack it up and take it home," said Custer.

Keeping trash off the beach and out of the lake isn't just good for the environment. A clean beach could also help ensure the tourists--that are so valuable to Lake Texoma--keep coming back.

"In a perfect world this beach would be pristine, you could come out to it and not worry about stepping on broken glass. Tourism is a big part of this lake, and right now I can’t imagine that anyone would come out here and want to come back," said Reinert.
