12-28-06 An energy company gives Texoma residents a way to share the warmth this winter. As temperatures drop, heaing bills go up meaning trouble for some people.
Natural gas provider Atmos Energy is starting a new program called the Round-Up initiative. Here's how it works: let's say your bill comes to $65.05. You could round it up to $66.00 and the difference would go to the Sharing the Warmth program.
The program already takes donations to help the elderly, disabled, or low-income families pay their bills. Atmos officials say customers in our area donated nearly $200,000 to the program last year. The money went to local emergency assistance agencies. They hope this program will give customers an opportunity to give a little more to help those in need.
"I'm grateful for the sharing the warmth program because without it my grandkids and I wouldn't have heat or hot water to take a bath," Dorothy Griffin, an aid recipient said. "It helped me a lot."
Atmos officials say you can also donate larger amounts as well. All are tax deductible. A round-up option is expected to appear on future bills. More information is available at www.atmosenergy.com
