1-4-07 A crude oil refinery abandoned in the 1940's is causing health concerns in Ardmore. In 2005 the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease launched a public health assessment study. The old imperial refinery company site sits northeast of Ardmore on Refinery Road. Although it was abandoned in 1948 when the company declared bankruptcy, rusty drums, streams, and reservoirs were left behind. Residents fear cancer causing contaminants such as Arsenic and Lead could remain on the site seeping through the soil and water table. A meeting is set to discuss the results of the study.
The meeting will be held Wednesday at the Ardmore Public Library in the Smith Room from 6-7:30 pm. Officials from the DEQ and the EPA will be on hand to answer questions.
