Jail Overcrowding Leads to Selective Arresting

1-13-04 - The temporary Bryan County jail is overflowing with inmates and it’s to the point that local officers are double checking exactly who they arrest and for what crimes.

Over the weekend there were 99 inmates locked up, in a facility that has just sixty beds. Inmates are sleeping on the floor and keeping them healthy in such a crowded, confined space is difficult. Last week, about fifteen of them were ill with upper-respiratory problems.

The jail has been overcrowded before and they've never turned an inmate away, but as a courtesy, local officers are being cautious about who they bring in.

Sheriff Bill Sturch says they are putting the finishing touches on a revamped jail. It's supposed to be completed in about a month.
