Oklahoma Schools Getting Extra Money

1-23-04 - What a difference a year has made for public schools in Oklahoma. After surviving severe budget cuts, 2/3rds of Oklahoma schools will be getting extra money from the state.

The money comes from an annual action by the state called midterm adjustments. It's based on ad valorum taxes and student population. Local schools are benefiting; Ardmore gets $150,000, Plainview $180,000, Durant $107,000, Hugo $27,000, Sulphur $121,000, Ada $310,000, and Madill $300,000.

Ardmore school leaders says the money proves Oklahoma's economy is picking up. Ardmore and Plainview districts hope to use the new money to hire more teachers, buy supplies for classrooms, and help build their carry over for the next year.
