Dangerous I-35 Stretch Getting Help

1-29-04 - A deadly stretch of Interstate 35 from Sanger to Gainesville is getting some attention from the Texas Dept of Transportation that could save lives. More than a dozen people have died in less than three years on that stretch - many of them in head-on collisions.

That’s why Tex-Dot is looking into an inexpensive cable barrier to keep cars from crossing into opposing traffic. The barrier will consist of three to four high-density cables that will absorb some impact during an accident. The barriers are also cost effective.

They run between $15 and $18 per foot instead of concrete barriers that can reach $40 to $50. The barriers could be installed as early as August.

One stretch of highway in Oklahoma City uses the cable barrier system. So far in 163 wrecks there have been no fatalities.
