COAL COUNTY, OK -- A high-speed chase through two Oklahoma counties ended with the suspect dead, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper injured, and a major highway shut down.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Coal County Trooper Mark Bennedict was chasing a vehicle headed eastbound on Highway 3 from Tupelo when he reported the suspect had hit a semi head-on. The trooper's unit was involved in the crash as well.

The suspect, 42-year-old Michael Allen Penny, was killed, and Trooper Bennedict was taken to a Coalgate hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been treated and released.

Witnesses tell troopers it looked like Penny ran into the semi intentionally, but the investigation continues. The technical investigation team reconstructed that crash, and troopers are investigating why the suspect was running from law enforcement.

The semi truck driver was not taken to the hospital, and the trooper was not seriously injured.
