Two Robberies - One Suspect Still at Large

2-11-04 - Two armed robberies in as many days for Gainesville. The most recent was at a convenience store, and in a bizarre twist, the suspect’s girlfriend helped turn him in.

Gainesville police say the town averages about 12 armed robberies a year, but two on back to back nights is uncommon. The first robbery happened at a fast food restaurant Monday night.

Then Tuesday night a convenience store was robbed on highway 82. Police got a break in the store robbery overnight. They arrested Tony Howard of Muenster after his girlfriend called police claiming he'd stolen her car. She also told police where to find him.

Investigators say Howard used the car to drive to the store, rob it, and then dumped it in Love County, Oklahoma. But police don't believe the two robberies are connected. The man who robbed the Whataburger Monday night does match a description of a man wanted by police in Purcell, Oklahoma for fast food robbery there.

The robber in both cases is described as a white man in his late 20's with a receding hair line and facial hair. He was last seen driving an orange colored car, possibly a Toyota.
