Honey Grove, TX - The legend of Texas hero Davy Crockett was the inspiration for a home town festival in Honey Grove today. There was a lot of country culture on the town’s square, but the festival was more than a local celebration. It also brought a much needed boost to the city
"This is the greatest day in Honey Grove history, Davy Crockett camped here under an oak grove and that is how Honey Grove got its name," said resident David Redus of the Davy Crockett Festival.
And that city pride spilled over from many people people of Honey Grove, as traditional folk music, homemade barbecue, of course coon skin caps roamed the town's square.
"Things that draw people out to Davy Crockett day are the heritage, food, good fellowship with their neighbors... Just to have a good time,” said Roger Harris, who dressed up in authentic mountain-man garb to resemble Crockett.
But the celebration brings one thing to the small town of Honey Grove that Festival Director Patti Hicks says is vital – business.
“All day long we have maybe 1,800 to 2,000 people roaming around so that's got to give us a little bit of a boost,” said Hicks.
The festivities bring the town to life, which both business owners and residents appreciate.
"Look at the tractors, look at the people, it's beautiful it's entertainment and it's something that Honey Grove needs yearly," said Redus.
And according to residents like Redus, the hustle and bustle of the festival fills that need.
"This town is about dried up if you look at it... This is the only activity we have in the year, so I love it,” said Redus.
And through their legendary tale of Davy Crockett and how he once camped here, admiring the honey bees, the people of Honey Grove hope to bring something big to their small town.
"I would like to see Honey Grove prosper, and I think bringing people to our town and celebrating our history and our heritage can do that,” said Hicks.
The annual Davy Crockett Festival has been taking over Honey Grove’s downtown for over 25 years, and is a tradition the towns people hope to keep alive for a very long time.
