High Winds Topple Durant Building

2-19-04 - High winds knocked down an old building in downtown Durant Thursday afternoon. The old Brimage Hotel on Main Street and First lost an entire wall around 3:30pm. The three story building had stood for decades No one was hurt in the collapse. Texoma area firefighters have been busy as well with grass fires, while in West Texas, dust storms are causing traffic tie-ups. Already, at least one tree and a powerline have blown down in Sherman.. Meanwhile, emergency personnel are responding to a string of accidents Thursday on US Highway 84 south of Lubbock during strong winds and dusty conditions. Two people are dead and at least four have been hurt in traffic accidents. The Texas Department of Public Safety is discouraging travel in the Lubbock area due to poor visibility caused by the dust storms. The National Weather Service reports gusts of more than 50 miles an hour have been recorded in the area this afternoon.
