New Sirens in Bryan County
DURANT, OK -- When dangerous storms approach, information about where and when the storm will strike can be found in several places. However, getting a warning to someone who may already be asleep, or have their phone turned off can be more difficult. DURANT OK--When dangerous storms approach, information about where and when the storm will strike can be found in several places, on the radio, or the internet, and of course right here on KXII.com. However, getting a warning to someone who may already be asleep, or have their phone turned off, can be more difficult. That's why Bryan County is installing 23 new sirens that can be heard from over a mile away.

In a Bryan County warehouse, sits more than a dozen new sirens, ready to be installed.

"Even though some people are doing away with their sirens we are actually putting in new sirens," said Bryan County Emergency management director James Dalton.

He says he spent a lot of time researching the new sirens that will be going up all over Bryan County over the next few months. The state of the art warning devices can be used during any type of emergency.

They have battery back-ups, can be triggered via radio, and some of the new models are capable of delivering voice messages rather than the standard air raid warning that is the norm. The new hardware is just one aspect of The All hazards notification system.

"You are either going to get hen via twitter or facebook or text message, so we are looking at ways to get that information to them via those medias," said Dalton.

The sirens are designed to alert people who are outside of approaching dangers, so to warn people inside, Bryan County is exploring the option of weather radios that can come on automatically when a warning has been issued.

However no amount of warning can protect people if they don't know what to do once the sirens sound.

"We encourage people to have a plan in place, know when you get a warning where you are going to go and how to react to it," said Dalton.
