Anhyrdrous Ammonia Theft - Explosive Problem

3-31-04 - Methamphetamine is one of the most dangerous drugs in America, but a by-product used to make it is becoming more and more of a hazard in rural Texoma. Meth cooks steal Anhydrous Ammonia and store it in converted propane tanks. But those thieves are discarding the tanks along roadsides and in ditches, creating a hazard for anyone who finds them.

Drug Task Force agents in Carter County were getting the word out Tuesday about the danger, after a tank was found along Refinery Road in Ardmore. Often, the tanks still contain the deadly gas, which under the right circumstances can explode, or poison whoever finds it.

Drug agents say the problem is only getting worse as more and more of these are tanks turning up.
