DENISON, TX -- The North Texas Regional Airport played host to a special event Friday afternoon, and while there were no wings involved, participants of today's 'Run What You Brung' Drag Race were really flying. Josh Stevenson has the story.

The good the bad and the ugly, and of course the really, really fast -- all were present for the 'Run What You Brung' Drag Race Day at North Texas Regional Airport. It is all part of the Kustom Kemps of America Hot Rodding weekend in Denison.

While not traditionally part of the car show scene, people who build these one-of-a-kind machines, jump at the chance to run them.

"Drag racing is really hot right now, so we have incorporated into this event and it is really going well," KKOA president Jerry Titus says.

There were all types of cars on the strip, from the cherry classics to trucks to the rat rods, one-of-a-kind customs built to be ugly and fast.

Jim Coons came all the way from Iowa to run his old Bel Air.

"It’s just an old car we played with back in the 70's, and we had some nostalgia this year so we brought it down."

Coons’ old car runs the quarter mile in around 11 seconds, but while everybody wants to be the first to the finish line, the most important thing for the owners of these original cars is getting to see what else is on the track and meeting other people who have a passion for loud and fast cars.

"You see them, and I haven't met any of them before in my life, but we are hot rod buddies you know."
