Bonham Vet Played Crucial Role in World War II

4-7-04 - A Bonham man marked a special anniversary on Wednesday - 59 years to the day that he nearly single handedly created a turning point in World War II.

Jay Tarwater thinks about the Great War most everyday. But April 7th, 1945 stands out, still vivid 59 years later.

Known as Tarbaby Tarwater back then, the young Navy pilot flew a mission to sink the last Japanese cruiser in the Pacific. He dropped the torpedo that sank the Yagano, and four months later, Japan surrendered.

Tarwater left the war with 13 medals, inclduing the Navy Cross - the highest naval award.
