03-26-04 (Washington-AP) -- The government says Americans held their
pursestrings a little tighter last month, with consumer spending
rising just two-tenths of one percent. That was a little less than analysts were expecting, though they say it is enough to keep the economic recovery going. They also say consumers may be inclined to spend a little more in the near future as they receive their tax refunds. At the same time the Commerce Department reported that income
rose by four-tenths of one percent last month. That was a little
better than the three-tenths of one percent rise that analysts were
looking for.
