DURANT, OK -- A Durant Police officer severely injured in a crash, is now back at home, and already anxious to get back out on the streets. During a chase back in September, Officer Justin Blackshear crashed his patrol car into a tree. Thursday, he visited the Durant Police Department for the first time since the accident, and talked about his recovery for the first time exclusively to KXII.
After spending 34 days in the hospital, Officer Justin Blackshear has come back to the Durant Police Department.
"I would come to work right now if I could suit up, No doubt in my mind," Blackshear said.
The last time he was at work was on September 26th. He was pursuing a suspect down Old Highway 70, when he lost control and crashed into a tree.
"I remember the call we had right before that, and then after that I remember waking up in the hospital," Blackshear said.
Blackshear suffered several injuries in the crash--a concussion, a broken shoulder blade and his left arm was impaled by a tree branch.
While Blackshear recovered from surgeries and skin grafts in the Hospital, he was visited constantly by friends family and fellow officers.
"In a strange way, it brought everybody together," said Durant Police Chief Durward Cook.
Last Tuesday, co-workers, along with friends and family organized a benefit to help with Blackshear's medical bills.
"I appreciate everything they have done, my family appreciates it," Blackshear said.
He says while he's anxious to get better and get back to work, he is looking forword to spending time with his two year old son, who he didn't get to see while he was in the hospital, due to H1N1 restrictions.
"He was waiting for me when I came home, he came running out and screaming, then he told me to watch out for the mud and to be careful coming up the stairs, I didn't know he could talk that well," Blackshear said.
