SHERMAN, TX -- America Recycles Day is coming up on November 15th, and several cities across Texoma want to make sure you know about their recycling programs, so you can do your part.
The City of Sherman makes it pretty easy to recycle, by providing curbside pickup of special recycling cans that are an included service along with your water and trash.
Since those recyclables don't even have to be separated, it would almost be harder not to recycle in Sherman.
"We have gotten very high participation rates, comparable to any city in the united states," said Jeff Miller, Director of Public Works, for the City of Sherman.
More than 70 percent of Sherman residents take advantage of the system and recycle.
In Denison, residents and city leaders are still trying to find a way to make mass recycling work for them.
"Our big job on the Keep Denison Beautiful recycling committee is to educate the public," said Richard McGowan, of Keep Denison Beautiful.
Right now Denison residents can do their part, by bringing recyclable material to the residential collection station off of F.M. 84.
Like in Sherman, the items don't have to be separated, all of that is done at a plant in Plano. The recycling station has been open for a few years now, but many Denisonians still don't know it’s there.
"I still have people who don't know, even people who have lived here a long while say, I didn't know Denison recycled," said McGowan.
One of the reasons Denison hasn't adopted a curbside system yet is because of the cost. In Sherman, they use the profits earned from selling the bulk recyclable material to help offset those costs, a system that works best when many people take part.
"You pick it up at the curb, you put it all in one container and people will participate, that's what we have shown over the years," said Miller.
Whether or not, cities make recycling easy, some say, it’s worth the hassle to do your part.
"We can no longer to waste stuff in America. It is unbelievable what we waste here," said McGowan.
